USING INNOVATIVE EQUIPMENT TO ENGAGE KS4 GIRLS
Objective: | |
To increase Y10 girl’s participation and improve attitude and behaviour in PE and sport.
|
|
What did we do? | |
Y10 girl’s participation and attitude towards PE as a whole was poor. We looked for a new innovative activity that might enthuse the students more and found Kangoo.
Kangoo Jumps are safe, low impact rebound sport shoes, providing many great health benefits, for everyone, any age. Kangoo Jumps reduce impact on the body by up to 80%. They provide the very best protection to your ankles, knees, hips lower back & spine. At the same time they burn up to 25% more calories than any other exercise.
Two members of staff completed an FIA approved instructor course, funded by the School Sport Partnership. Following this Kangoo was offered as part of the girls curriculum (it was also offered as an extra-curricular club). However, a key rule was set - no kit/improper kit = can’t take part.

What difference did we make?
Prior to Kangoo, PE kit and the percentage of non-doers were very poor. In one class 7/28 girls did not bring their PE kit to lessons. Some of these girls attempted to do PE in their school trousers and shoes. On average there would be at least two girls not taking part in each PE lesson. The amount of physical exercise all the girls did in a lesson was also low and the majority of girls would barely get raise their resting heart rate.
We had 22 pairs of boots which meant we could offer a class of 21 girls the Kangoo activity. When the option was given to them, 24 girls expressed an interest and signed up. The following week kit was excellent and even in this very short space of time we could see an improvement.
The Kangoo activities carried out were delivered in ‘aerobic style’ lessons. This tended to reach out to those girls who weren’t ‘games players’ but to those girls who liked gym/dance activities. The classes went well and the amount of physical activity each girl was getting increased significantly, to the extent that a water stop/break was introduced to the lesson!
When the time came to changing activity again, it was clear things would return to normal and behaviour and standards started to slip again. So Kangoo was brought back as an option, and things improved again. To make Kangoo more interesting, the class then started to exercise outside with Kangoo boots on. The girls liked having the freedom to exercise in their own style rather than be teacher led. As the weeks went on, a jog around the local estate became the norm and the girls brought water along with them and in some cases listened to their ipod/music on the way round.
Having Kangoo as an option also allowed the group sizes for PE to become smaller allowing more learning to take place in other areas. The ‘good’ girls were able to take part without distractions and felt more comfortable in the PE environment. The ‘sporty’ girls were able to have a good workout and the rest have a much better workout than before.
The amount of physical exercise and the quality of PE the girls do within a week, has increased significantly since Kangoo was introduced. One girl was quoted saying “This is such good fun and I have lost weight since we started doing Kangoo, especially on my legs, can we do this next year as well?”
There have been regular occasions when we have had 100% of girls taking part in their PE lessons (in correct kit).

How did we collect information?
We collected information to show the success of the work by:
Keeping a register of lessons marking attendance, kit marks and medical notes
Questionnaires from the girls about the impact of Kangoo
Feedback from teachers and the PE department
Comments from the girls during and after lessons
